barbara holland – the joy of drinking yra geriausia mano kada nors skaityta knyga apie alkogolį. didžiausiam skaitymo malonumui reikėtų turėti patogų fotelį ir ramiais vakarais versti puslapį po puslapio, būtinai su gėrimu rankoje. aišku knyga trumpa ir greit skaitosi, todėl užteks vos keliems vakarams arba valandoms.
tai trumpa ir nuotaikinga alkoholinių gėrimų visuomenėje istorija iš gėrimų entuziasto požiūrio taško. šiais laikais alkoholis labai stigmatizuotas, bet taip nutiko tik paskutiniais šimtmečiais. įdomi autorės teorija, kad labiausiai gėrimams koją pakišo automobilis. iki tol lėbautojus namo gabendavo arkliukai, kurie blogiausiu atveju nerasdavo namų, o su automobilio atsiradimu kiekvienas, sėdęs prie vairo po taurelės, yra potencialus žudikas. netikėtas pastebėjimas knygoje – žodis “pagirios” anglų kalboje atsirado tik XX amžiuje.
nežinau, ar knyga būtų nuotaikinga žmonėms, kurie iš arčiau susidūrė su alkoholizmu, bet vis tiek rekomenduoju ;]
Labai teisinga pirmo autoriaus pastaba. Lietuva ir jos socialinė sankloda abstinentui yra visiškas pragaras, jis būna atskirtas nuo visuomenės.

The most egregious of such suits was filed against Sun by Kodak (yes, the film photography people). Egregious, because Kodak had acquired a patent from a defunct computer maker (Wang) for the exclusive purpose of suing Sun over an esoteric technology, Java Remote Method Invocation (“Java RMI” – not exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Kodak”). Given how immature Kodak’s technology business was (they were just starting out in the digital world), we had little we could respond with – I suppose we could’ve hunted for a Wang-like opportunity to hit at their core, but Kodak was a customer, which certainly complicated things, and the time and expense involved would’ve been prohibitive.

Šiaip jau Lietuvoje tai stigmatizuota blaivybė, kiek teko pačiam asmeniškai pastebėti, bet knyga spėju nebloga :-)
